The Jews from Szydłów near Kielce

In Szydłów, which is situated in central Poland (50 km from Kielce), there is the oldest documented Jewish cemetery, dated form the beginning of the 15th century. In 1564 a huge stone Synagogue was built. It is the oldest existing Synagogue in the Kielce district. Before the Second World War about 680 Jewish people used to live in Szydłów; that was around 30 per cent of general population.

In early October 1942 the Szydłów Jews were moved out to Chmielnik, which is situated 19 km from Szydłów. The ones who were unable to walk were shot immediately. The rest of the Szydłów Jews came from Chmielnik to the Treblinka camp, where all of them were gassed and cremated.
